An Australian teenager on Tuesday kicked off preparations for her bid to become the youngest person to sail solo, non-stop and unassisted around the world. Jessica Watson, 16, left the northeastern Sunshine Coast region on a 10-day test run to Sydney ahead of her bid to sail around the world by April 2010. After the test run, Watson, who has been sailing since she was eight years old, will make final preparations before setting off for the Tasman Sea in her pink 10.4-meter sloop when the weather is favorable. “I plan on taking around 10 days to sail down to Sydney so that I get plenty of time on the water to test all the systems and give Ella’s Pink Lady a good run-in,” Watson wrote on her online trip log. She will attempt to break the record set in 1999 by fellow Australian Jesse Martin, who took 327 days, 12 hours and 52 minutes to sail ar...

Nomad P837 Indonesian navy plane missing with 9 aboard

JAKARTA (AP) — A small Indonesian military plane disappeared over Borneo on Monday with nine passengers and crew aboard, a navy spokesman said. The Nomad P837 light aircraft was on a routine patrol over the province of East Kalimantan when it lost contact with air traffic control at around 0100 p.m. local time (0600 GMT), navy spokesman Rear Adm. Iskandar Sitompul said. It was flying between regional airports on the Indonesian half of Borneo island, which is shared with the country's northern neighbor, Malaysia, he said. The Indonesian military has long complained that its fleet of aircraft are outdated and poorly maintained due to underfunding and a recently lifted U.S. ban on weapons sales. A series of military plane crashes has killed dozens this year in Indonesia. Indonesia is in the process of upgrading aviation safety regulations after commercial airline crashes in recent years killed more than 120 people, prompting a ban of Indonesian flights in EU airspace.
